The Telecommunications Engineer is responsible for providing tactical planning, engineering design, engineering consulting, documentation, licensing, equipment lifecycle management, and third-level technical support of the telecommunications transport and wireless networks for the Southern Company and associated subsidiaries.
The role involves strategic and tactical plans and engineering designs for all telecom network facilities and services provided, managing budgets, developing engineering standards, and coordinating with external service providers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing technical support for transport network planning, engineering design, and engineering consulting
- Developing and participating in projects related to Systems Protection initiatives, long haul fiber, leased service delivery, and GPON technology
- Offering third-level maintenance support and backup maintenance/installation coverage for identified networks/equipment
- Recommending and coordinating equipment and service health monitoring activities
Requirements include:
- Experience in planning and establishment of Distribution SCADA services and other WAN-based services
- Familiarity with telecommunications transport systems such as fiber optics and RF/MW technology
- Knowledge of fiber to include OSP across multiple platforms
- Understanding of distributed computer networks, including routers, switches, hubs, digital transport, and fiber optic transport
- Knowledge of SONET/TDM, Switched Ethernet, MPLS, GPON, and IP WAN technologies
- Experience in coordinating cross-functional teams and managing multiple project responsibilities
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field
